Mask a document before you share it

Cover the parts of a copy you do not want to hand over — on an Aadhaar card, usually the first eight digits of the number. The file is opened on your own device and never uploaded.

Three things worth knowing

The cover is permanent. Most free tools draw a black box on top of the page and save both layers, so the thing underneath is still in the file for anyone who opens it in an editor. Here the page is flattened into pixels and the cover is painted into them, so there is no layer to lift off.

The location where you took the photo is removed. A phone records the coordinates of where a picture was taken inside the file itself, and for a document photographed at home those are the coordinates of your home. Saving a masked copy here rebuilds the picture, so that information does not travel with the copy you share.

This is an independent tool. It is not connected to, endorsed by or authorised by any government body or issuing authority. If you need an officially issued masked document, get it from the authority that issued it.

Why share less

A full copy of an identity document is worth money to somebody. Once it is in a WhatsApp group, an email inbox or a shop's folder of photocopies, you have no way to take it back. Sharing a copy with most of the number covered, marked with who you gave it to and when, means a leaked copy is both less useful and traceable. Our free digital-safety courses go through how these documents get misused.
